National news outlets such as The Times, Independent and Guardian reported that researchers from University College London and Queen Mary University published an observational study. This study suggested that women who work more than 55 hours per week are more likely to develop depression than their male counterparts. These articles highlighted that women often face “a double burden” of managing between long hours at work, domestic chores and childcare which they tend to take a more active role in compared to their male partners.
Therefore, we wanted to highlight the services, resources and events available on the Mental Health Camden Website which support women’s mental and physical health/wellbeing.
In Camden, there are a variety of services which range from legal advice, community-based befriending, exercise classes, back to work initiatives and counselling available.
A few prominent local services for women are:
- Women + Health – offers both long and short term counselling and psychotherapy service for both individuals and groups in Camden
- Henna Asian Women's Group – a community-based organisation that was set up by Asian women migrating from India, Pakistan and East Africa. They run services such as exercise classes, telephone befriending, one-to-one home visits, advice and listening.
- Kosmos Centre – a drop-in advocacy service for BME women and their families, offering legal advice, befriending, health and wellbeing.
