Advocate (formerly the Bar Pro Bono Unit)

This service is free
What do we offer?

Advocate is a charity offering assistance with finding barristers for drafting, advice or representation in court. We match members of the public who need legal help, with barristers who are willing to donate their time and expertise in deserving cases for those who are unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay.

Who should use this service?
This service is available to anyone who is unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay, excluding cases that are are eligible to receive public funding or are covered by insurance. Strict eligibility criteria apply and assistance cannot always be guaranteed.
What is the referral process for this service?
Referrals are accepted from: Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Local MPs, Law Centres or Legal Advice Clinics. You cannot apply directly but a copy of the application form can be found on this page:
More information on how to apply and eligibility criteria is available on the website:
Wait times and limits
Each case must be vetted first and then if accepted an appropriate barrister must be found. Wait times therefore vary.
